Superintendent Gilbert, walking away from the fire, head bent in despair. Most of the pipes were shattered so water pressure was very poor. The fires burnt for 72 hours. The firemen could still smell that sweet smell of burning flesh for months after the fire.
Two cars in this picture are amongst the rubble of concrete that has fallen into the street from the buildings. Most of the people died on the footpath as they rushed out of the buildings. There were not many head injuries. If anything hit you on the head it killed you!
